Boeing Business Case Competition 2022

In 2022, I participated in the Boeing Business Case Competition. Working with a passionate team of 5, we dove into aerospace challenges, aiming to uncover areas of opportunity for Boeing. Our collective insights and innovative solutions earned us a proud 2nd place. Our approach was to dissect and understand Boeing's contract processes, which led to notable improvements in customer satisfaction and a boost in profits. Personally, my role was curating datasets and designing visualizations, playing a key role in identifying and addressing potential roadblocks for the company.

Boeing Business Case Competition 2022 Introduction

Background:

Boeing, the world's leading aerospace company, serves a global clientele, including commercial airlines and U.S. and allied governments in over 150 countries. The company specializes in manufacturing commercial jetliners, defense, space, and security systems, and providing aftermarket support. With a workforce spanning over 65 countries and a history of aerospace leadership, Boeing is at the forefront of aviation innovation.

Scenario: Boeing anticipates a major contract in January 2023 from the German Ministry of Defense, worth over $6 billion, for the purchase of 60 Chinook helicopters, including training and in-service support. The Chinook is a renowned heavy-lift cargo transport helicopter widely used by the U.S. Army and allied militaries. With production constraints and economic challenges, Boeing aims to optimize its supply chain, manage cost escalations, and ensure timely deliveries.

Challenges:

  1. Growing competition both domestically and internationally.

  2. Economic conditions impacting cash flow and supply chain.

  3. Limitations on Chinook delivery numbers per year for both the US Army and Germany.

  4. Predicted cost escalations due to labor and material costs.

  5. Lead time and supply chain concerns, especially around the longest lead time component – the transmission.

Call to Action:

Participants, as consultants, were tasked to:

  1. Devise a delivery plan aligning with customer needs and maximizing Boeing's profit.

  2. Suggest strategies to manage inflation and mitigate economic risks.

  3. Decide on the feasibility of a $10M investment to reduce lead time for aircraft production.

  4. Provide financial analysis, covering Return on Sales (ROS) and Net Present Value (NPV), and elucidate the financial implications of proposed changes.

  5. Plan supplier engagement and assess the supply chain impact of any changes.

Final Deliverable:

Teams were required to present their solutions in a 15-20 minute presentation to a panel of Boeing judges. The presentation was to highlight the challenges, recommendations, and supporting evidence. All team members were expected to contribute to the presentation, dressed in business casual attire. Digital materials were to be submitted by a specified deadline.
